THE beginning

The Waldorf Hotel opened in 1893, merging with the adjacent Astoria Hotel in 1897. This union, connected by the famous Peacock Alley, created The Waldorf Astoria, a symbol of luxury in New York City.

The Waldorf Astoria Clock, created for the 1893 World’s Fair, features four time zones and prominent historical figures. It was later gifted a gilded Statue of Liberty by France

Conrad Hilton, who for many years kept a photograph of the Waldorf Astoria New York under the glass on his desk with the phrase 'The Greatest of Them All' written on it, acquires the management rights to the hotel.
